Avoid the weekend madness, make your Thursday eve an occasion!

Thursday is the new Friday.
If you are tired of the B&T crowd flooding London restaurants and bars every weekend, East London is the place to be, and Thursday is the time to be there.
Tucked away on a side street (still just moments away from Shoreditch High Street station) is the kitchen of Bootleg Banquet, expertly run by Linda and Peter. Their Three-Course Thursdays are for you, if you:
-enjoy delicious, genuine food in an informal setting, but don't want to be rushed with your meal (the event starts at 7, and usually lasts 3 hours)
-like the idea of pulling out a nice bottle from your own collection without having to pay corkage (apart from the glass of welcome fizz on the house, it's a BYO concept)
-want to have a really pleasant evening with someone special without being confined to your table-for-two, or just like to meet new people and have interesting conversations (they have a nice, big communal table, where people can socialise)
-still want to catch the last tube
Our dinner started with a spoonful of delicious creamy, tangy goats cheese and lavender jelly as amuse bouche, followed by a perfect broad bean, pea and mint risotto (Peter is an expert in Italian cooking, particularly risottos and home made pastas, while Linda has a background of classic French cuisine).
We then took a little break, having a glass of wine on the terrace, catching the last glimpse of daylight, before returning to the table for the main course: slow-cooked porchetta with all the trimmings - chicken liver and raisins stuffing, red wine glaze and crunchy cracklings, served on top of puy lentils and roasted fennel. It was well thought through and well executed, something that you really wouldn't cook at home (unless you have a family of twelve and a day to spare).
The dessert was a real treat again: coconut panna cotta topped with strawberries braised in red wine with black peppercorns and a lovely croqant crumble. We finished with a refreshing mint tea, and some more laughter with our fellow diners. Later we left with the thought that we just discovered something absolutely brilliant: the art of dining out on a Thursday night.
You should try it too!

Tarantino triumph

I'm all for edible experiences, but wary of events that might distract from the main attraction of enjoying my dinner. So, as a pop-up restaurant virgin, I apprehensively pitched up at a doorway in Shoreditch last night with no idea what to expect. What I got was a warm welcome from chefs, waiting staff and fellow diners alike. You're right on top of the kitchen, watching the ease with which the Tarantino film themed food is produced, and what wonderful food. Finest.Burger.Ever. Fried chicken worthy of a Michelin star. The dips for the nachos quietly but brilliantly demonstrating culinary flair and keen eye for detail. I loved every minute and every mouthful and I'm not easily pleased.
There are many successful pop- up restaurants out there. What makes this one stand out from the crowd is such well-organised informality and warmth. But, most of all, the sure footed, clever and creative efforts of the two outstanding chefs, Linda and Pieter. A class act, indeed, and we're already booking them to do two events for us next year.

Halloween 2013

What a great night! Arrived to be welcomed with a delicious halloween themed cocktail which was topped up several times and a fabulously decorated room- real effort had gone into the table decorations, lighting and music. Communal tables meant you could sit in your own group and make friends with others. A 5 course themed menu was faultless- clearly made using lots of skill and great ingredients. The squid ink and pumpkin ravioli and polenta courses were winners for me. All in all you could tell great care was taken over every detail and the friendly hosts made everyone welcome. Would definitely recommend to friends and will no doubt make it to another of their nights in the future.

The Halloween edible experience was visual feast as much as it was delicious. The décor perfectly set the scene for this Halloween themed dinner. The food was creative and delicious and perfectly timed.

Future suggestions: I found the music a little too loud to comfortably enjoy talking to other guests (without yelling). Although it was Halloween and meant to be dark and scary, it also would have been nice to have been able to see what we were eating a bit better. Given so much time and effort when into preparing the black and orange theme, I felt that this effort was lost in the darkness of the room.
